COUNCIL NEWS - SEPTEMBER MEETING

Venue and voting centre(s) for the 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM)
For the 42nd AGM to be held in June 2017, the Council approved the proposal to use the HKIE Headquarters and the Jockey Club Auditorium at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as the voting centres. The latter will also be the venue for the 42nd AGM.

Proposal of Joint Institutes Default Adjudicator Nominating Body under the proposed Security of Payment Legislation for the construction industry
On the recommendation of the Executive, the Council approved to proceed with the formation of the Joint Institutes Default Adjudicator Nominating Body under the proposed Security of Payment Legislation with The Hong Kong Institute of Architects, The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Further, the Council agreed to the Development Bureau's proposal to amend the HKIE Ordinance for the purpose of the setting up the Joint Body.

Termination of the HKIE Project Sichuan Trust Fund
The Council approved the termination of the HKIE Project Sichuan Trust Fund and the transfer of the remaining assets of the Fund to the HKIE Benevolent Fund.

Renewal of Agreement of Co-operation with The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
On the recommendation of the Learned Society Board, the Council approved the renewal of the Agreement of Co-operation with the IET.

Renewal of Agreement of Co-operation with the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Inc (PICE)
On the recommendation of the Learned Society Board, the Council approved the renewal of the Agreement of Co-operation with the PICE.

Renewal of Publishing Agreement of HKIE Transactions with Taylor & Francis
The Council approved the renewal of the publishing agreement with Taylor & Francis covering the publication of HKIE Transactions for another five-year term from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2022.


The HKIE Media Luncheon 2016
To strengthen our relationship with the media, the Institution hosted the HKIE Media Luncheon for around 30 local editors and reporters on 7 September 2016 at The Park Lane Hong Kong.

President Ir Joseph K H Choi highlighted the theme of the Session, "Our Five O's: One Institution · One Profession  One Great Future · One Belt · One Road", and introduced the new initiatives of his presidential year. Past HKIE Presidents, Executive Members, Officers, Chairmen of the Public Relations Committee, Community Service Committee and the Media Communication Unit also attended the luncheon to meet media friends and share their professional views on various engineering issues. Highlights of the event are reported on page 30 of the Journal.

Inaugural ceremony for the HKIE Student Chapter at Hong Kong Baptist University
The inaugural ceremony for the Student Chapter at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) was held on 7 September 2016. More than 40 participants attended the ceremony, including HKIE members, faculty members and engineering students of HKBU. More details about the inaugural ceremony can be found on page 32 of the Journal.

The HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers 2016
The HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers has been organised for 11 consecutive years with the aim of encouraging young engineers and researchers to publish their works and advance in their professional fields.

Three outstanding papers were selected for this year's Award and the prizes were presented during the HKIE Presidential Dinner on 26 August 2016. A technical seminar was also held on 13 September 2016 for the awardees to present their accomplishments to members, practitioners and engineering students. Details and photos of the prize presentation ceremony and the technical seminar are available on page 29 of the Journal.

Fundraising activities for the Institution's accommodation
The Committee on Fundraising for Institution's Accommodation (the Committee) has plans for a number of initiatives to raise funds for the Institution's accommodation. The first fundraising activity was organised during the Presidential Dinner on 26 August 2016. With the efforts of the Organising Committee set up by the Committee for the Presidential Dinner for Session 2016/2017, fundraising programmes designed to create a fun-filled atmosphere were launched during the dinner, including band performances, souvenir sales, the pre-launch of "ALDE-canter" and a table-prize draw. We are pleased to report that over HK$300,000 was raised at the Presidential Dinner. The Institution would take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors for their generosity. Please refer to page 22 of the Journal for details. Other fundraising activities in the pipeline are a Golf Day, the Hiking and Planting. Please stay tuned for further details of these activities.

Three-way meeting with the Guangdong Registration Centre and The Hong Kong Institute of Architects
Ir Prof Lau Ching-kwong, Chairman of the Task Force on Mutual Recognition Agreement between the HKIE and National Administration Board of Engineering Registration (NABER), Ir Chan Siu-tak, Past Structural Discipline Representative and Dr Jenny Tang, Senior Manager - Accreditation, Registration and External Qualifications, represented the Institution at a three-way meeting in Shenzhen with the Guangdong Registration Centre and The Hong Kong Institute of Architects on 9 September 2016, at the former's invitation. During the meeting, views and feedbacks on the current reciprocal recognition for the Structural Discipline as well as the possibility of organising the related Mainland Continuing Professional Development courses in Hong Kong were exchanged. More details will be covered in the next issue of the Journal.
