On behalf of the CA Division, Ir Prof Louis Lock, Chairman of CAI Discipline Advisory Panel, was cordially invited to deliver  presentation concerning The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers to the engineering undergraduates of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) at the university in the afternoon of 10 January 2022.

During the delivery, Ir Prof Lock introduced the importance of the Institution with respect to the engineering courses offered by CityU, and other local universities. The value of accreditation by the Institution were explained, with respect to the Washington Accord of the International Engineers Alliance. The students were also encouraged to treasure the accredited courses i.e., be industrious in their studies. Then, the vision, mission and core values of the Institution were addressed. Subsequently, the career path of a professional engineer in general was elaborated on. The common concern of ‘low’ salary upon graduation was also discussed. Once professional status was acquired, the renumeration appeared to be encouraging.

Ir Prof Lock deliberately put the emphasis on the benefits of being a member of a professional institution like The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The role as a student member was explained. Some typical advantages like participating in learned society activities to keep up to date with contemporary and relevant know-how, broadening one’s horizons and being able to liaise with other professionals, academics and industrialists were illustrated. Afterwards, Ir Prof Lock addressed the rules of conduct of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Most of the audience treasured the necessity of entertaining the related stakeholders including eers, employers, clients, customers, professionals and the public.

Around ten students expressed their eagerness to learn more about the Institution to enable them to become a professional earlier and thus contribute to the profession, industry, and society at large. The question-and-answer session was conducted and a few expressed the view that they would join the Student Chapter at CityU.
