Seminar on performance-based approach for resort development in Macau

A one-day seminar on performance-based approach for resort development in Macau was successfully held on 5 December 2008. A full house of 130 attendees gathered at the Venetian Macau Resort. The seminar started with an enthusiastic opening speech by Ir C K Wong, Chairman of the FE Division.
Afterwards, the sessions started with the following presentations:
• The performance-based approach from an owner’s perspective by Brain Taylor, Director of the Fire Protection and Life Safety, Venetian Macau Ltd
• The challenges of adopting an international code and third-party inspection by Mr Robert J Keough, Vice President, Pacific Rim Operations, Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc
• Fire engineering for large buildings by Robert Nelosn, Fire Protection Senior Engineer, Arup Fire
The morning session ended after the question-and-answer session. After lunch, the seminar resumed with a brief introduction on the fire protection systems in Venetian Macau Resort by Mr Vincent Wong, Assistant Chief Engineer, Venetian Macau Ltd. Mr Wong presented the daily operation of the facilities team relating to the fire-fighting equipment and facilities for the wet, dry and smoke purge system for the hotel, casino and podium of the Venetian Macau Resort.
After the presentation, the participants went on a guided tour to the fire pump room, fire command centre, smoke purge plant room, hotel guest room, staircase landing control valve and the rest of the casino. They were led by the designer and installation contractors, Parsons Brinckerhoff (Asia) Ltd, Chubb Hong Kong Ltd, Guardian Fire Engineering and Consultant Co Ltd, Ryoden Engineering Ltd and Shinyro (Hong Kong) Ltd. During the visit, the installation contractors briefed on the design and installation requirements and the international codes applied in the resort development.
Afterwards, souvenirs were presented to the sponsors and the guided tours team by Ir C K Wong. The participants had another question-and-answer opportunity before the proceedings were brought to a close.
