Winners of the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2008 announced
By Ir Dr C M NG

The Hong Kong ICT Awards 2008: Award of the Year was presented to PremiumSoft CyberTech Ltd for its Navicat for MySQL development on 9 February 2009. Competitors included the grand award winners of the eight categories: business, digital entertainment, digital inclusion, innovation and research, lifestyle, professional development, public service application and ubiquitous networking.

For the third year since the inception of the Hong Kong ICT Awards, the IT Division was selected to host the Best Public Service Application Awards. 21 applications and 37 entries were received for the three subcategories: transformation, most favoured and small scale projects.

The virtual reality photography in hospital application developed by the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital was the grand award winner under the Best Public Service Application Awards. The project fosters an effective 3D interactive communication tool for practical safety measures in infection control, medical training, etc. For example, the virtual ward tour allows clinicians to plan and explain complex hospital operation, ward design, and medical procedures to the other parties. The inclusion of complicated domain knowledge into a new technology is the critical success factor as it has resulted in low-cost implementation. Furthermore, the application is beneficial to the community as a whole.

The public also voted the electronic passport (e-passport) system developed by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government as the most favoured public application. Whereas, the small scale projects gold award was presented to the tele-health link project developed by the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association. The personal touch of the project through assigning registered nurses to follow up on medication of the elderly has warranted its adoption.

Congratulations to the winners and all those who have contributed to the success of the awards. For more details, please refer to the website at http://www.hkictawards.hk.
