Young Engineer Project! 2009 opening ceremony By Mr Steve YEUNG To mark the commencement of YEP!2009, an opening ceremony was successfully held in the afternoon on 7 February 2009 at the City Top Restaurant of CityU. This opening ceremony also provided an opportunity for the attending yeppers to communicate with their mentors and to meet their groupmates. After a speech delivered by Ir Dr Winco Yung, Chairman of the MI Division, the tea buffet started. During the buffet time, yeppers took the precious opportunity to ask their mentors for advices and information on the industrial engineer field which benefited them much. "Sparkling IE" is the theme of this year's YEP programme, a well-received annual programme for students who are studying at tertiary education institutes in the field of IE. The organising committee has firm belief that students study in IE discipline can definitely be sparkled after entering the industry and gain benefits from the mentorship programme together with local and the PRC firm visits. Through all these meaningful activities, the yeppers could have diversified information regarding IE which will sparkle them after their graduation. Our upcoming events will be local firm visits. Hong Kong Six Sigma Forum 2009 By Ir Richard TSE The Hong Kong Six Sigma Forum 2009 organised by the MI Division was successfully held on 21 February 2009 at the Senate Room of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) with over 120 participants attended. The forum was co-organised by the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of the PolyU and supported by the YMC, IETHK, IIE(HK), HKSQ, HKQMA, ISSC, SSSHK and SSI. The forum started with a welcome address by Ir Richard W N Tse, Chairman of Organising Committee and followed by an opening address by Ir Dr Winco Yung, Chairman of the MI Division. After the souvenir presentation to the speakers and sponsor’s representative, the forum started with Ir Dr Ricky Yeung chaired the first session and Ir Dr Y C Chan presented the first paper "engineers' role in business improvement". The first session ended after Ir Dr Aaron Tong presented his paper “walking out of the financial tsunami - experience sharing on helping the Pearl River Delta manufacturers". Chaired by Ir Peter Chak, the second session started right after the tea break where all participants had good interactions with the speakers and among themselves. Mr Henry Soo presented his paper "solution for profit = TOC + Lean + Six Sigma synergy” and followed by Dr Eddie Au's paper "difficulties in launching Lean Six Sigma in a multi-national corporation". Ir Dr Victor Lo, Past Chairman of the MI Division, then facilitated an open forum together with all the speakers to exchange views with the audience in different aspects of Six Sigma in Hong Kong. The audience actively participated with a good questioning atmosphere. The forum would become a truly regional forum on Six Sigma with a good spectrum of experiences and perspectives in the future. After the open forum, Ir Dr Michael Y H Li, Deputy Chairman of MI Discipline Advisory Panel, presented the closing remarks. It was followed by the presentation of certificate of services to the organising committee members and helpers. The event ended with a group photo of all speakers, the MI Division Members, organising committee members and helpers.
