Ir@SHOW

Organised by the Task Force on Fund Raising for Sichuan Earthquake Recovery, Ir@SHOW was successfully held on Wednesday, 13 January 2010 at the Grand Stage in Western Market. The dinner was graced by the presence of the heads of government departments including Mr Au Choi-kai, Ir John Chai, Ir Stephen Chan, Mrs Marigold Lau, Ir Ma Lee-tak as well as Mr Li Ling and Dr Zhong Hua from Liaison Office of the Central People's Government. It was well attended by over 250 members and guests.

The evening started off with welcome remarks from the President Ir Dr Andrew Chan and followed by various singing and musical performances by guest artists including Ir John Chai, Ir Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Mrs Adelina Lo, the Highways Department Band, the CLP Echo de Light Interest Group and a magic show by an engineering student Mr Ng Ka-wai. All guests left with happy memories of an enjoyable and meaningful event.

With an additional fund generated from the sale of raffle tickets, a total amount of over HK$200,000 was raised for the HKIE Project Sichuan Trust Fund. The Trust Fund is now open for applications. Inaugural ceremonies of the HKIE Student Chapters in the Chai Wan and Sha Tin campuses of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education

The inaugural ceremonies of the HKIE Student Chapters in the Chai Wan and Sha Tin campuses of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) were held on 1 and 5 February 2010 respectively to mark the establishment of the two Student Chapters.

Student Chapter - IVE (Chai Wan)
Attended by more than 80 participants including the HKIE members, department representatives, guests and engineering students of IVE (Chai Wan), the ceremony was graced by the presence of Ir Dr Ong Lay-lian, Head of Department of Computing and Information Management, as the guest of honour. It was delightful to have Ir Kam Hon-man, Vice Principal of IVE (Chai Wan) and Dr Sidney Ho, Deputy Head of Department of Engineering Management and Technology to present at the ceremony and witness the birth of a new Student Chapter.

Ir Dr Ong expressed her appreciation on the setting up of the Student Chapter in the Chai Wan campus in her speech. Vice President Ir Dr F C Chan highlighted in his speech that the future of the engineering profession counts on the young generation. His words gave the reason for the setting up of Student Chapters, which aimed to foster a spirit of friendly collaboration amongst its members as well as to encourage the engineering students to maintain a close link with the Institution through their participation in the HKIE activities and learned society activities of technical nature.

Being the founding Chairman of the HKIE Student Chapter - IVE (Chai Wan), Mr Andy Choi, briefly introduced the activity plan of the Chapter throughout the year. He hoped that through organising visits and delegations, members would keep abreast of the updated development of the engineering profession within and outside Hong Kong.

There was a sharing session during the ceremony where Vice Presidents Ir Dr Chan, Ir K K Choy, Ir Simon Chung, Chairman of the EL Division and Mr Benjamin Lam, Past Chairman of the AMC discussed the present status and future development of the Information Technology Discipline. They also shared their valuable experiences with the audience and encouraged the students to take every opportunity to upgrade their skills and knowledge in order to meet the challenges ahead.

The ceremony ended with a big applause to the establishment of the HKIE Student Chapter in IVE (Chai Wan).

Student Chapter - IVE (Sha Tin)
The inaugural ceremony of the Student Chapter in IVE (Sha Tin) was well attended by over 80 participants including the HKIE members, department representatives, guests and engineering students of the IVE (Sha Tin).

Ir Dr Peter P K Chiu, Head of Department of Electronic & Information Engineering, was invited as the guest of honour. In his speech, Ir Dr Chiu showed his appreciation on the work of the Institution, particularly on the establishment of the Student Chapters in local tertiary institutions.

To echo the speech of Ir Dr Chiu, Immediate Past President Ir Peter Y Wong presented the Institution's mission to nurturing young engineers through the set up of Student Chapters in tertiary institutions.
Being the Chairman of the Chapter, Mr Wayne Cheung shared his vision for the Chapter in the coming year. He pledged to do his best to organise activities for fellow engineering students to broaden their views and horizons.

During the sharing session, Immediate Past President Ir Wong, Council Member Ir Helen Szeto, Ir Duncan Wong, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and Mr Otto Mak, Chairman of the AMC had great interactions with the audience on discussing the future development of the engineering profession. Their professional views and experiences were valuable reference for students in crafting their career plans ahead.

The ceremony ended under a harmonious atmosphere.

Building Safety Carnival 2010

The HKIE was invited to participate in the Building Safety Carnival 2010 jointly organised by the Buildings Department, Hong Kong Housing Society and Urban Renewal Authority on 17 January 2010 at Victoria Park. The Carnival aimed at promoting timely and proper maintenance of buildings in order to ensure public safety. This year, the Carnival also featured performances by popular singers and artistes, exhibition and game booths. The Institution has set up a game booth and display panels to raise the public awareness of building safety.
