Happy Hour

Task Force on Communal Sports and Social Service
By Ms Marion K W KAN

Sports and social service are both effective means to foster a stronger communal relationship, by providing a platform for members to meet, exchange, cooperate and experience as a team.

Set up by the Executive, the Task Force on Communal Sports and Social Service chaired by Ir Sidney Tong aims to strengthen the fellowship among professional institutions as well as different engineering disciplines of the HKIE, and to promote the image of engineers through participation in social services.

The Task Force has sourced and planned a wide spectrum of activities to be held in this Session for members' participation. As a start, a Corporate Team representing the HKIE participated in the Orbis Moonwalker 2018, which is one of the signature fundraising campaigns of Orbis with an aim to promote the mission of "To liberate blind people" and allow participants to experience the journey of "From the dark to light" by walking from mid-night to dawn. The event was successfully held through the night of 10 to 11 November 2018. Our team members enjoyed the walk very much and thrilled to meet new friends from different Divisions.

The Task Force will roll out a series of events in 2019, including an Orienteering Fun Day jointly organised with the Hong Kong Orienteering Club on 12 January 2019, a cross-institutional Bowling Competition, Dragon Boat events, as well as social service programmes such as home renovation for people in need. Besides, the Task Force will identify suitable events organised by the engineering and construction industry for members' information.

The active participation of members is indispensable for the success of the events. We cordially invite you to join us and have fun in the upcoming activities. We will update members on the details soon. Please stay tuned!

The HKIE Engineer Cadet Club Programme

The HKIE Engineer Cadet Club Programme has kicked off its Phase II in November 2018 and nearly 400 secondary school students have been engaged in the STEM-related activities so far.

With the support from the STEM Buddies and companies in the engineering industry, three school talks and three site visits were conducted in the past two months to arouse students' interests to explore the career as engineers. The positive feedback from students and teachers proves that the Programme is a fertile ground for the promotion of engineering. More activities will be rolled out to the participating schools throughout the whole academic year.

If you would like to join us as STEM Buddies, please email us at engineercadet@hkie.org.hk.
