Online forum for technical seminar
Programme highlights
From time to time, there is heated discussion during the question-and-answer session of technical seminars. To allow more members to participate in the discussion and in-depth exchange of ideas among members and the speakers, a forum would be set up in the Divisional Homepage. Members participated in the seminar are welcome to send their follow up questions, observations and opinions on the topics discussed in the technical seminar to the Chairman of Technical Programme Sub-committee (Email: eewclo@polyu.edu.hk or Fax: 2906 1930) for consolidation and forward to the speakers for response (if required). The summary of the submission received for each seminar would be put in the Division Web Page for member's information and follow-up discussion. Interested discussion topics may also be summarised and consolidated to be presented in Division's Annual Symposium or published in the proceedings.

Submissions
The submission shall preferable in MS Word file or black ink printed in A4 pages. The language used can be Chinese or English. Please state the preferred contact method and details (email address, contact phone number or fax number) in the submission. GEOTECHNICAL

Registration of volunteers for assisting schools reconstruction in Sichuan
(Jointly organised with Sowers Action)

Programme highlights
The 5.12 earthquake in Sichuan killed nearly 70,000 lives and made devastating damages to buildings and infrastructures in Sichuan and nearby provinces. On the request of Sowers Action, a charity organisation focusing on improving foundation education in poorer parts of China, the GE Division has joined force with them to carry out several field inspections in Sichuan and neighbouring Gansu and provide specialist engineering advice to assist them in evaluating funding applications and retrofitting damaged schools. The works of the teams included the complete inspections of pre-fabricated temporary schools, auditing of construction works on schools funded by Sowers Action and gathering information/interviewing relevant people relating to new funding applications.

The GE Division and Sowers Action collaboration will continue. In particular, it planned that the collaborated team will jointly apply for funding under the HKSAR Government's trust fund in support of reconstruction in the Sichuan earthquake stricken areas. All the envisaged works require a team of dedicated volunteers, especially with engineering knowledge. The Division is now appealing for your help, which can encompass evaluating engineering proposals in Hong Kong or carrying out week-long on site assessments in Sichuan and neighbouring provinces.

Registration & enquiries
For registration, please complete and return the Standard Reply Form to Ir Dr Eric Li. More information on the works of Sowers Action can be found at the website at http://www.sowers.org.hk/ or contact Ir Dr Eric Li at Tel: 2591 1774 Email: ericsfli@gcgasia.com.hk or Ir Toni Zen at Tel: 9823 3253 Email: tongatsowers@gmail.com.

BUILDING SERVICES

Recruitment for volunteers for Sichuan school reconstruction project
Programme highlights
Sowers Action (]®E¦æ°Ê) is building a number of schools in Sichuan as their continued effort to support the poor in rural areas of the PRC. They have been organising volunteer engineering inspection team (usually a group of four, including structural, BS, etc) every month to conduct the quality inspection and monitor the work progress in the schools. Following the 5.12 earthquake incidence in 2008, the BS Division, on voluntary basis, has committed to support the Sowers Action, particularly in two school reconstruction projects in Sichuan which are funded by the HKSAR Government. In spite of the promising result of the BS Division's professional support, Sowers Action is appealling the BS Division to extend the service support to other schools projects they are undertaking. As this is a meaningful event which is worth supporting, the BS Division is now appealling for the support of all engineers in the BS, Electrical or Mechanical Disciplines to enroll as volunteer to work for this project.
