Seminar on transgenic fish for biomonitoring estrogen-like substances
(Jointly organised with the EV Division, AMC and SSC)

Date, time & venue
17 August 2010 (Tue); 6:30pm - 7:30pm; HKIE

Programme highlights
Many substances in our daily life can act like estrogen, the female hormone, and disrupt the physiologic functions of human and other organisms. Monitoring these estrogen-like substances using chemical analysis is exact but very expensive and cannot evaluate their biological effects. This seminar will introduce an innovative switch-on technique using transgenic fish for accurate and rapid biomonitoring the estrogen-like substances. In the presence of estrogen-like substances, the transgenic fish will be switched on and give off green fluorescence signal, and the intensity of the fluorescence directly reflect the concentration of the estrogen-like substances. This innovative transgenic fish method can not only rapidly identify estrogen-like substances, but also evaluate their biological estrogenic activity and toxicity. Additionally, this method can also identify pro and anti-estrogen substances, and measure the combined effects of mixtures. Case studies of applying this transgenic fish to monitor environmental water sample, food stuff, cosmetics and pharmaceutical will be shared.

Speaker
Dr Cheng Shuk-hang, Associate Professor of City University of Hong Kong
