New Protégés seek to contribute to the engineering profession

To offer young engineers a unique opportunity to develop their careers, President Ir Prof P L Yuen has selected 12 young members to take part in the President’s Protégé Scheme 2020/2021. The newly-selected Protégés will shadow and work with the President and be given the opportunity to interact with other leading engineering professionals. Here are the self-introductions of the Protégés and their visions in the engineering profession.

Miro CHAN Sum Chau

I then joined the Airport Authority Hong Kong as a Graduate Engineer in the Third Runway Division. This was a truly precious chance to be involved in a megaproject.

As a “dualer”, I believe integrating different ways of thinking can help inspire engineers. That was why I integrated a number of different technologies including building information modelling, the internet of things and machine learning into a smart campus project. Luckily, with this project, my team was recognised by several awards including the Outstanding Students Award at the Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards 2019 and a Special Mention in the HKUST President’s Cup 2019.

It is such a great honour to be one of the Protégés, and I am excited about broadening my horizons by networking with senior engineers through the Scheme. I would also like to take this chance to promote engineering to the public and encourage the younger generation, especially young women, to join the engineering industry.
