The Plover Cove Reservoir - A Manmade Wonder

The Plover Cove Reservoir is the world’s first freshwater coastal lake constructed from an arm of the ocean. This photo shows how civil engineering projects can involve interplay between technical and social elements. While providing water supply and being a vital part of Hong Kong’s water infrastructure, the main dam is also a famous landmark attraction for leisure activities, as it is packed with tourists during the weekend.

Black Point Power Station D1 unit is a newly developed combined cycle gas turbine that has the highest power capacity of 500MW in Hong Kong. It is one of the indispensable infrastructures, supplying our everyday usage of electricity. Being a part of the CLP gas turbine team, I am honoured to participate in D1 Outage as an intern and look forward to contributing zero-carbon power generation as an engineer.

Together We Can Build a Tunnel

Alone one can only do so much, together we can build a tunnel. This photo captured the project team of DSD’s ongoing project “Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns” discussing the tunnel reinforcement works in front of the reinforcement bar fixing gantry. Your teammate is always your best reinforcement, and so are you to them.

The UK Chapter organised a summer lunch in London on 2 July 2022. This was the first face-to-face social gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic. The lunch event was attended by around 20 members and friends of the HKIE in the UK.

The Deputy Chairman of the UK Chapter, Ir Dr Michael Wan, gave a brief welcoming address. He was delighted to see so many new faces and made an appeal for members to support upcoming events. A full table of dim sum was then served, and all attendees enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere.

The lunch brought together many veteran engineers who have retired and young engineers who have recently arrived in the UK. It was a good occasion for different generations of engineers to exchange views and share their experience and memories of contributing to the engineering profession in Hong Kong.

The UK Chapter would like to thank the Organising Committee who made this event such a success, and we look forward to serving the HKIE members in the UK with forthcoming events and activities.
