I am truly honoured to be elected Chairman of the BD Division for Session 2022/2023. I am also proud of the past chairmen and dedicated committee members who have made such great contributions to the Division over the past years. My special tribute goes to Ir Anthony Kwong, the Immediate Past Chairman, for his excellent contributions to leading the BD Division through the last session particularly when the impact of COVID-19 persisted and caused disruption to some of the schedules and major activities.

We are all living in a fast-changing world and facing global challenges which are also relevant to and influential in Hong Kong such as the pandemic and climate change. At the same time, these challenges also present great opportunities for building engineers and practitioners who possess the knowledge and skills to tackle problems and create a better living environment through innovation and advanced technologies.

Buildings play a significant role in the lives of every city. Building design and construction have had a huge influence on the success and achievement of a sustainable built environment. The BD Division comprises members who specialise in engineering design, construction, building management and academia, and who promote state-ofthe- art building design and technologies through technical seminars and technical visits.

The 20th Annual Seminar held in October 2022 under the theme of “Disruptive Innovation for Buildings in Smart Cities” is the highlight of the Division.

The BD Division will continue to promote interaction and fellowship between professionals and stakeholders in the building industry. We will also treasure opportunities to collaborate with other divisions and institutional bodies where appropriate in jointly organising high-value learned society activities.

With the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we hope that we can organise our activities and events with fewer uncertainties. I look forward to your continued support of the BD Division and active participation in the coming year.
