On 12 May 2023, the Institution signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cyberport, with the intention to jointly promote innovation and technology (I&T) and to foster an entrepreneurship culture among engineers.
A simple yet meaningful signing ceremony was held at the HKIE headquarters. The MoU was signed by Mr Peter Yan, CEO of Cyberport, and Ir Aaron Bok, President of the HKIE. Vice President Ir Alice Chow, Council Member Ir Wilson Kwok, and the GE Division Committee Member Ir Jack Yiu were present to witness the signing. On the Cyberport side, their Chief Public Mission Officer Ir Eric Chan, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications Ms Sandra Chong, and Senior Manager of Ecosystem Development Ms Clara Hong attended the ceremony.
The goal of the partnership is to motivate engineers with different professional backgrounds to pursue entrepreneurship and assist them in realising their concepts to tackle issues faced by society through Cyberport’s Entrepreneurship Programmes. Over the course of three years, this partnership will allocate up to five fast-track quota per year to HKIE members in Cyberport’s Entrepreneurship Programmes. Nominees will have the chance to fast-track interview for the programmes and, if accepted, may receive up to HK$500,000 in financial support. Additionally, Cyberport will offer entrepreneurial guidance on a regular basis, share knowledge and success stories to members of the HKIE, and make full use of its platform and resources to support aspiring engineers in initiating their entrepreneurship endeavours.
Ir Bok and Mr Yan both emphasised the importance of expanding the pool of talents for the I&T sector to strengthen Hong Kong’s role as an international I&T centre. “As problem-solvers, engineers are well-equipped to help transform and realise R&D outcomes in the field of I&T,” said President Ir Bok in his opening speech to encourage engineers, “especially the younger generation, to embrace the I&T culture, and to take on the challenge of entrepreneurship”.
The application for the programmes is now open to all HKIE members. Interested members can learn more at https://cyberport.hk/zh_tw/cyberport_creative_micro_fund
