The HKIE President’s Protégé Scheme (PPS) 2022/2023 has proven to be a fruitful and rewarding experience for all the protégés involved, and we would like to extend our appreciation to President Ir Aaron Bok for his guidance and support.

Through this programme, not only have we gained valuable insights into the corporate affairs of the HKIE, but we also participated in a range of activities assigned by the President to support the Presidential Theme of the Session, “We are Proud to be Engineers”. A range of events were held with meaningful objectives in mind, such as fostering the visibility of the engineering profession; contributing to society with a long-term vision; nurturing future competent engineers; and increasing recognition of our professional status.

As the HKIE PPS 2022/2023 draws to a close, we look forward to joining the HKIE President’s Protégés Club (PPC) and continuing to support future Presidents in their reforms and campaigns. Finally, shared below are our personal experiences of being President’s Protégés over the past year, which have been both valuable and rewarding.

Miss Sarita CHAN Sai Tung

Embracing our shared pride in being engineers, President Ir Aaron Bok’s tenure has been a period of inspiration and unity for all the HKIE members. Working alongside other devoted young engineers who are equally passionate about making a positive impact has been a truly rewarding experience.

Engaging in the activities of the Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023, such as exhibition and carnival, allowed me to forge camaraderie, showcase our profession’s advancements, and effectively convey complex engineering concepts to diverse audiences. Organising career talks and hosting video campaigns provided me with opportunities to guide aspiring engineers on navigating their career paths. Additionally, participating in internal meetings enriched my understanding of the HKIE’s operations and decision-making processes.

These experiences have contributed to my professional growth and deepened my connection with the community. As a Protégé, my pride in engineering has been strengthened, inspiring me to continually pursue professional development within the field.

Miss Keiko KAM Wing Sum
I am extremely grateful to have been chosen as one of the Protégés this year, and it was a great honour to work alongside President Ir Aaron Bok and my fellow Protégés. Over the course of this year, I had the valuable opportunity to shadow Ir Bok in various meetings and official events, which allowed me to broaden my perspective and expand my network. Additionally, I had the chance to step out of my comfort zone and try everything, such as participating in a music video and helping out in a public carnival.

In addition to these experiences, I also played a role in coordinating career development and engineering programmes for university students. These programmes aimed to introduce students to the various career paths available to engineers, as well as to highlight opportunities such as internships and graduate jobs at different engineering companies.

Overall, my time as a Protégé has been an amazing and fulfilling experience. I am excited to face new challenges and opportunities as a young engineer and to continue to be proud of my profession.

Miss Carmen LAM Ka Man
I am extremely honoured to be selected as one of the Protégés in this Session. Being a Protégé is truly a milestone for me. Shadowing the President Ir Aaron Bok throughout this time-flying year, I had the valuable opportunity to participate in various institutional activities and official events. Working alongside my fellow Protégés, I participated in the video production for the HKIE’s theme song and STEAM education school support program; I also held career seminars in local universities and participated in carnival to tell good engineering stories and promote engineering to the public. I am grateful that I can grow up and learn from my fellow Protégés this year.

Apart from serving the Institution, my personal skills have developed as well. My public speaking skills have improved through my participation of The HKIE Prize Presentation Ceremony cum New Members’ Reception as its emcee. I learnt about the thinking mode of my respected seniors by sitting in Council or Executive meetings. My network has expanded by participating in various official events.

Lastly, I would like to express my greatest gratitude to Ir Aaron Bok for offering me such an invaluable opportunity to serve the institution as his Protégé. And I wish the friendship among our Protégés will last forever.

Miss Hazel LAM Wing Laam
The President’s Protégé Scheme is not a programme that we simply go through but grow through. Shadowing the President allowed me to learn how the Institution works and witness its development, and also to build connections with prestigious engineers within the industry. I have also developed more soft skills through public speaking workshop, some filming and a media luncheon.

Under the Presidential Theme of “We are Proud to be Engineers”, the Protégés were involved in promoting engineering to the public. Apart from taking part in video campaigns where we shared the success of some experienced engineers, I was also able to be cast in “3-minute Engineering Discovery” to showcase the project that I am currently working on. To target university students, we organised career talks hosted by the President to enable students to know about the career prospects and the exciting projects coming up.

The most unforgettable experience is definitely the carnival in the Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023 where we showcased the diversity and the significance of engineers through games, talks and our new theme song (Yes, engineers can sing too). I feel proud to be part of the team in promoting my industry and I feel hopeful about seeing great results.

I would like to thank President Ir Bok for what I learnt from the shadowing, and the opportunities provided by the Institution.

Ir Eva LEE Ho Yan
I was truly honoured to be selected as one of the President’s Protégés. I would like to show my greatest gratitude to our President Ir Aaron Bok, who gave me this opportunity to join various public engineering events and sit in important HKIE meetings like the Council or Board meetings to get to know more about the operation of the HKIE.

Throughout this year, I had the chance to join the promotional activities of the Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023, like the Fundraising Cycling and Run and the large engineering carnival in the West Kowloon Cultural District for promoting 21 engineering disciplines to the general public. I was responsible for introducing the Building Division (my Division) in its booth to the public, especially to young children, to arouse their interests in the construction industry. I had also participated in a video campaign, acting as a moderator to interview an accomplished engineer, so as to let young engineers know what they can achieve in around ten years’ time by joining the engineering profession. I, too, learnt a lot by hearing interesting stories about remarkable projects.

Other than that, being an emcee at the HKIE Presidential Address/Dinner for Session 2022/2023 was definitely the most unforgettable experience in my life. It was my first time to be an emcee in such a large event, which boosted my confidence in public speaking and enhanced my presentation skills, at the same time broadening my professional network.

I was glad to work alongside my fellow Protégés. Together we will continue to promote engineering and dedicate ourselves to the engineering profession and building a brighter future.

Mr Holland LEE Hok Lun
I am deeply honoured and grateful to be a Protégé under the leadership of President Ir Aaron Bok.

Participation in the video campaigns enabled me to witness the success stories of experienced engineers and their remarkable projects. It strengthened my pride as an engineer and fuelled my passion about being a part of the profession.

The Hong Kong Engineers Week Carnival was another remarkable highlight of my time as a Protégé. Seeing the public appreciate our work was a great joy, and I am proud to have contributed to promoting the profession to a wider audience.

It was a humbling experience to work with President Ir Aaron Bok and other talented engineers in different HKIE task force activities and also internal meetings. I would like to extend my gratitude to my fellow Protégés, who are all outstanding and brilliant engineers. The President’s Protégé Scheme provided me with valuable knowledge and connections that will undoubtedly influence my personal and professional growth in the future.

Mr Gordon LEUNG Jing Shang
Participating in the President's Protégés Scheme of the HKIE has been an exceptional experience, elevating my perspective on the engineering profession. The scheme, which entails shadowing the President of the HKIE, has provided me with a prestigious opportunity to learn from a seasoned leader and visionary in the field of engineering. The Presidential Theme of this year, “We are Proud to be Engineers”, has been an inspiration, highlighting the critical role of engineers in society.

My participation in the Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023 was an enriching experience, comprised of engaging events aimed at creating a positive and lasting impression of engineers on younger members of our society. I was also honoured to be one of the singers of the promotional theme song, “Proud to be Engineers”. It was a unique experience as I was privileged to sing with President Ir Aaron Bok, leaders of HKIE and my fellow Protégés and to promote our profession in the form of music.

I express my sincere appreciation to our President for providing me with this invaluable opportunity to learn and grow as an aspiring engineer.

Miss Jessy NG Cheuk Sze
I would like to express my deepest gratitude for having been selected as one of the Protégés this year. It was such an honour to have the opportunity to work with President Ir Aaron Bok and my fellow Protégés. Throughout this year, I have had the valuable chance to shadow President Ir Bok in various meetings and official events, in which I broaden my horizon and expand my network. I had also tried out different things that I never thought I would ever do, such as shooting a video to introduce STEAM and being part of a music video.

Apart from that, I was involved in coordinating career development and engineering prospects programmes for university students, to introduce them to the future path of being an engineer, as well as to highlight the opportunities available for them in different engineering companies, such as internships and graduate jobs.

It was truly an amazing and fruitful experience to be a Protégé. I look forward to embracing the new challenges that a young engineer would surely encounter in such a time of opportunity and continue to be proud to be an engineer.

Mr Edison PAK Chun Wing
It was a tremendous honour to be selected as one of the Protégés, shadowing President Ir Aaron Bok. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our President Ir Bok for his visionary leadership and steadfast dedication to our profession.

From serving as emcee to hosting video campaigns and engaging in various task force activities as well as internal meetings of the Institution, it has truly deepened my insights, benefiting both my personal and professional growth. Having the privilege to assist in the Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023 and career Talks and fairs are certainly the standout moments of this adventure. Being a Protégé this year has exposed me to a wide array of experiences, making for a diverse and enriching journey.

Lastly, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside my fellow Protégés and to have met important people in my life. I am proud to be part of the “Proud to be Engineers” motif, which instilled a deep sense of pride and purpose in our work. Although the President’s Protégé Scheme is coming to an end, our relationships can continue to thrive. Together, we shall continue to uphold our integrity and engineer our future.

Mr Kenny SIU King Hay
It was my great pleasure to be one of the Protégés of this Session and to receive the precious opportunity to shadow President Ir Aaron Bok. It broadened my exposure to the engineering profession, as well as gaining insights into the efforts of the HKIE.

Early in the Session, I was pleased to be the emcee of The HKIE Presidential Address/ Dinner, facilitating Ir Bok to deliver his great message about the identity and pride of being an engineer. I was grateful to have joined external publicity activities such as a media luncheon, video campaign, and university talks, as well as an internal research task force on professional assessment systems. The Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023 was a notable highlight, which was an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with engineers from different disciplines for the publicity campaign.

The end of the Session does not symbolise the epilogue of the joyous ride, but an embarkation on a new journey full of aspirations and passion. The fruitful experience of working and learning with fellow Protégés was a unique and memorable development outside my working environment. I would look forward to new challenges and opportunities, in particular under the new normal, in seizing every chance of breakthroughs in pushing our industry forward.

Mr Sampson TAM Shum Yin
The past year of shadowing President Ir Aaron Bok as an HKIE Protégé has been nothing short of a remarkable journey. For this Presidential Session, the enhancement of the professional image of engineers and promotion of the Institution have been placed at the forefront, and opportunities were diverse and plentiful.

Early in the Session I picked up valuable public relations skills through taking part in public speaking training and the annual luncheon with the press. I was later part of a series of initiatives to promote the role of engineers in society, and we produced bite-size video clips comprising interviews with engineers and fun facts in engineering. The Hong Kong Engineers Week 2023 was the pinnacle of the Session for me, and I am grateful and proud to join other engineers in putting across the message “what we do is right at the heart of society’s advancement” to the public. I am also part of research task forces for refining the professional assessment system and advocating statutory recognition of the title of engineer - these are experiences which I have very much enjoyed and cherish.

I wish to thank everyone I have met along the way, be it seasoned engineers and prominent leaders of our profession, or engineering students and junior engineers like me; the experience would not have been as rewarding without any one of you.
