First of all, I would like to thank all my peers who elected me Chairman for Session 2023/2024. I am grateful for the leadership of the previous Chairmen, the steadfastness of the Committee and for all the volunteers who have together helped us get through the pandemic and emerge at the other end, a little bruised perhaps but very much in one piece with an ‘ops check normal’.
The AC Division’s success is underpinned by the overall success of aviation in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is seeing a resurgence in air travel, but we still lag behind our Asian peers and our progress is blunted by a dire skills crunch. There is a strong demand for aircraft engineers, mechanics, and technicians in Hong Kong as many former colleagues have left for new careers in Hong Kong or abroad. The Division supports initiatives to bring in professionals from the Greater Bay Area and to ensure smooth application processes for those who come from other parts of the world.
The Division is here to serve our members and Hong Kong and it is the Committee’s mission to prepare members and the industry with the knowledge tools they need by working with best-in-class partners here and abroad.
Like other divisions, we are rolling out our Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme (AEDS) programme for young engineers again. We have resumed our training activities, site visits and lectures, some of which are run in association with the Royal Aeronautical Society, Hong Kong Branch. We are also about to launch a sponsorship programme for young engineers who wish to study at university and aspire to join the aviation industry.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our activities and following our President Ir Dr Barry Lee’s theme for this session of “We Engineer, We Serve”.
