It is my great honour to continue serving as the Chairman of the BM Division for Session 2023/2024.
The growing focus on biomedical engineering is very evident now, with all the universities in Hong Kong offering biomedical courses, the support from the HKSAR Government, the number of new start-ups in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks and the increased levels of collaboration within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The reopening of the border between Hong Kong and the Mainland will mean an increase in cross-border activity and many of our members have already travelled overseas to proudly represent the HKIE. Hong Kong will utilise its unique position and strong academic research to collaborate with those driving the increasing levels of innovation and technology in the GBA.
The Mainland presents huge opportunities as well as challenges with its Healthy China 2030 policy and ageing population. Hong Kong has already started to focus on Smart Healthcare and Smart Hospitals and several pilot schemes have already been established.
This year will also be the year of our Biennial Biomedical Engineering Conference and once again we will bring together international, Mainland and local leaders to discuss the latest developments since the pandemic. We believe that this Conference will create and continue Hong Kong’s collaboration internationally.
The future of biomedical engineering continues to prosper locally, but our role will now extend further as we continue to exchange and share experiences and knowledge to help improve healthcare for societies everywhere.
All these initiatives will not happen without your involvement. I would like to appeal for your support to advance the development of the biomedical engineering profession for all ages and nurture new talent for the future! Thank you!
