Ir Michelle CHEUNG Hoi Kui

After graduating from The University of Melbourne with a bachelor’s degree, I pursued a master’s degree at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It is with great humility to share my achievements, including obtaining my chartered membership with the Institution of Civil Engineers in October 2020 and, later on, with The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in March 2022. I am also proud to have been registered as a Professional Engineer (Civil) as of 1 June 2023.

My work experience has been full of memorable moments, from working with a great team of colleagues to the time I asked the former Director of the Water Supplies Department for a photo, thinking mistakenly that he was the spouse of another public official. But above all, what keeps me motivated is the desire to leave a lasting legacy—a building that I can point to and proudly say, ‘I built that.’

It is my pleasure to be one of the Protégés for this Session. I look forward to making a difference in the world of construction, such as by inspiring and motivating young women to pursue careers in engineering.

Miss Christy CHUI Ka Kiu

Upon graduating from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2021, I joined the MTR Corporation Ltd (MTR) as a Graduate Engineer. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Innovative Design and Technology at HKU.

I am grateful to become a support engineer working in MTR Data Studio, leading MTR in the areas of Innovation, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. My job allows me to be a creative and innovative engineer and pushes me to think outside of the box. It is also very challenging for a young engineer like me, who lacks a solid foundation in railway engineering.

Thanks to my company that offered me the opportunity to be on a secondment to the Rolling Stock Department to strengthen my engineering knowledge. I truly believe that data is gold, and I hope one day I can use what I have learnt to serve the community.

It is my great honour to be selected as one of the President’s Protégés. I look forward to working with our President and other Protégés to serve Hong Kong with love and happiness.

Mr Tony HO Kin Tung

Growing up in Hong Kong, I have always been intrigued by the inner workings of technology and engineering. After completing my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong in 2020, I began my engineering training in the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, while also pursuing a master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Currently, on secondment to the Drainage Services Department, I have been involved in the Relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns, one of the large public works projects in Hong Kong. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding, as it has allowed me to apply my E&M knowledge to serve the community. My goal as an engineer is to continue serving the Institution and the public to the best of my ability, with professionalism and dedication.

Mr Kenneth HO Ying Yin

After graduating from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, I joined ATAL Engineering Ltd as Graduate Engineer (Mechanical) in 2020. My past experience enabled me to better explore the engineering industry; and in 2022 I was promoted to Engineer.

Working in ATAL’s environmental engineering department, I am provided with opportunities to take part in different environmental projects. I have been involved in projects of the Water Supplies Department and Environmental Protection Department; in 1/WSD/19 (In-situ Reprovisioning of Sha Tin Water Treatment Works (South Works) - Water Treatment Works and Ancillary Facilities), the project I have spent the longest time in, I have been able to further develop my technical skills and my role as an engineer. With my experience and engineering skills, I hope I could serve the engineering industry and the place where I called home - Hong Kong.

Other than working as an engineer, I have actively participated in various company events, hoping to improve the team morale and build a better team. These events help me to explore another funny and happy side of me, and which leads to my later participation in the HKIE President's Protégés Scheme.

Last but not least, thank you President Ir Dr Barry Lee for having me in his group of Protégés in this Session. There is no greater honour than to be part of this group and follow the President, who has an extremely similar E&M background. I will try my very best to serve the Institution and the President.

Mr Ivan IP Wing Ho

After I graduated from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering, I joined the Hongkong Electric Co Ltd as a Graduate Trainee. During my rotational training, I have the opportunity to be involved in different important projects, including power generation, transmission and distribution.

The experience of working in a power company is challenging but valuable and irreplaceable. I could climb up the chimney in Lamma Island to inspect various equipment or perform power cable jointing tasks in a cable trench. It is truly impressive to witness tangible outcomes of my prior studies. I think that is the beauty of engineering, which is the utilisation of an expertise to construct valid and useful infrastructure.

In this Session, it is my pleasure to be one of the President’s Protégés. I am looking forward to engaging in different activities and promoting engineering to the general public.
