The Cross-Harbour Tunnel (CHT) is an innovative infrastructure project that opened in 1972, connecting Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon Peninsula. During Hong Kong’s rapid urbanisation in the late 20th century, the demand for efficient transport solutions became critical. Before the CHT, ferry services were the primary means of crossing, averaging about 16,700 vehicles and 655,000 passengers daily. The tunnel, spanning 1.9 km with a dual two-lane carriageway, was the first sub-marine tunnel in the region and set a precedent for future infrastructure.;
Constructed using innovative techniques under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the CHT was Asia’s longest underwater road tunnel at its completion. The project involved constructing 15 prefabricated units which were submerged and connected to create the tunnel. This engineering feat not only addressed urban mobility challenges but also established high standards for project execution in Hong Kong's construction sector.
