On 7 November 2024, the CV Division and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Hong Kong coordinated the captioned trip to BYD’s global headquarters in Pingshan, Shenzhen. A diverse group of 30 participants including engineering consultants, Transport Department officials, and university students enjoyed an enriching experience.

The highlight of the visit was the morning session, which featured a ride on Shenzhen’s innovative SkyShuttle Line 1, BYD’s fully autonomous, battery-powered rail system. The line links 11 stations, operating between Pingshan High-speed Railway Station and BYD North. With a small dynamic envelope, tight turning radius and no guideway electrification, the SkyShuttle alignment can be designed to fit into the urban environment. Following the ride, the group explored the control centre gaining first-hand knowledge of the advanced technologies propelling this ground-breaking transportation system.

The networking continued over a delectable Sichuan lunch at the Yitian Holiday Plaza. The informal setting allowed for an easy exchange of ideas and experiences, further enriching the visit and fostering valuable connections amongst the participants.

In the afternoon, the group toured BYD’s impressive exhibition hall within the Hexagon Building. The guided tour offered exclusive insights into BYD’s evolution from a battery manufacturer in 1995 to a global leader in electric vehicles. Participants also had the chance to examine BYD’s latest electric vehicles, their innovative blade battery and cuttingedge technologies such as their “all-in-one” powertrain and emergency flotation system.

The visit underscored BYD’s leading role in technology and sustainability. The participants left with a deeper understanding of the current advances in electric vehicle technology and the importance of sustainable transportation solutions in combating climate change. BYD’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in their comprehensive zero-emission energy solutions and their role as a global leader in electric vehicle production.
