The Tai Po Gas Production Plant (TPGPP), established by Towngas in 1986, stands as a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s energy sector. It supplies town gas to over 2 million customers through an extensive network of over 3,700 km of underground pipelines. TPGPP’s commitment to cleaner energy is highlighted by its “Greener, Greener, and Greener” initiative, which focuses on progressive feedstock changes.
TPGPP's ability to innovate and adapt to changes has allowed its evolution in feedstock transformation. TPGPP utilises naphtha in gas production, which enables significant reductions in emissions compared to traditional coal and heavy oil. In the late 1990s, TPGPP enhanced its sustainability by integrating landfill gas into its production process and diversifying its energy mix, demonstrating Towngas’ environmental responsibility. By 2006, the adoption of a dual feed system, which combines natural gas and naphtha, further reduced carbon emissions, increased operational flexibility, and ensured a more reliable gas supply.
Key technical factors contributing to the success of TPGPP include high production efficiency that achieves around 90% thermal efficiency, plus advanced safety protocols through real-time monitoring. These measures enhance operational reliability and safety, which are crucial for meeting growing energy demand.
Socially, TPGPP significantly impacts the community by improving quality of life and supporting local economic growth by providing a reliable energy supply. Its sustainable development efforts throughout the years align with green environmental objectives in Hong Kong, setting industry benchmarks for safety and operational standards. Furthermore, TPGPP actively engages in community outreach, promoting clean energy through educational programmes.
TPGPP not only modernises Hong Kong’s gas supply but also is a leader in clean energy, influencing both residential and industrial sectors while paving the way for a future sustainable energy environment.
