The BS Division successfully organised the captioned visit on 11 January 2025. The visit received an excellent reception, with 30 members joining to appreciate the design of the main plant systems that support the operation of the new hospital block.
The half-day visit was a fruitful one, incorporating both an introduction to the project (in the form of a presentation) by the project team, and a guided tour. The introduction included background information on site characteristics and the specialised building services systems in the new block. Design considerations for maintaining system reliability and resilience were also shared, allowing our members to understand the requirements and key challenges in the design of a hospital. The project team also highlighted the advanced technologies adopted in the project, including Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) for various room types and Multi-trade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MiMEP) systems for major plant equipment.
Members then reviewed the various building service systems in the major functional areas, including the operating theatre, sterile core, general wards, infection control facilities, and the helipad. Members were also able to appreciate the design considerations of the foam and lighting systems in the helipad area to facilitate helicopter operations. They also discussed the specialised air supply and exhaust systems in the operating theatre and ward areas. Through the site visit and the insightful discussions of these special features, members gained a serviceable understanding of the implementation of the latest design guideline of public hospital in Hong Kong.
On behalf of the BS Division, we would like to express our gratitude to the Architectural Services Department for arranging this fruitful visit and sharing so much with our members.
