Our variously themed initiatives in the past month, ranging from education in popular science to promotion of I&T entrepreneurship, continue to enrich our collective professional journey and reaffirm our members’ commitment to engineering excellence.
One of the most uplifting developments last month was undoubtedly the unveiling of our 50th Anniversary emblem. Inspired by our Past President Ir Prof P L Yuen, this emblem thoughtfully and subtly employs bronze and golden hues to symbolise engineering’s half a century of contributions to Hong Kong’s development. The design encapsulates iconic visual elements such as bridges, aircraft, railways, and high-rise buildings—each reflecting the profound impact made by engineers on our city’s dynamic face. The interlocked numerals “5” and “0” powerfully signify the concepts of unity and solidarity, notions that have long been cornerstones of our Institution. As we proudly share this emblem with our members and the broader community, we warmly invite everyone to celebrate our legacy and work towards even greater accomplishments ahead.
Last month, the Institution was also honoured to participate in the Hong Kong Science Museum’s flagship science outreach event—HK SciFest 2025, held from 18 to 27 April under the theme “Local Contributions in Science”. As part of this celebration of scientific discovery, the Institution hosted two STEM-focused workshops specifically tailored for secondary school students, providing them with engaging, hands-on experiences in the world of innovative technology.
Meanwhile, our HKIE Enginpreneurs programme continued to flourish, nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit among our members. Early last month, our Task Force and five talented Enginpreneurs visited the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD). During this fruitful exchange, EMSD’s senior management shared their strategic vision for applying advanced technologies within government departments. Our Enginpreneurs seized the opportunity to showcase their cutting-edge innovations, demonstrating how their real-world applications may benefit public services and infrastructure across Hong Kong. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our friends at EMSD for their penetrating insights and warm reception.
Building further upon our efforts on this front, the Institution facilitated an engaging meeting—led by our Senior Vice President Ir Alice Chow—between our Enginpreneurs and Hang Seng Bank on 2 April. During this dialogue, our Enginpreneurs presented their latest breakthroughs in green building, sustainable construction, and retrofitting. In turn, Hang Seng Bank’s Sustainable Finance Team generously outlined their vision for sustainable finance and introduced tailored funding options to support startup ecosystems. This mutually beneficial interaction is characteristic of the way in which the Institution, by diversifying our members’ channels of innovation, has been assisting them in bringing their ideas to fruition.
Stepping into early May, the Institution will make a Presidential Visit to Australia, scheduled for 5 to 7 May 2025. During this visit, where Sydney and Melbourne are the twin destinations, our delegates will meet with our long-time strategic partners (one of such partners being Engineers Australia) and pay visits to local universities and infrastructure projects. Through a series of meetings, site visits, and receptions coordinated alongside our Australia Chapter and the Young Members Committee’s delegation, this visit will strengthen professional ties, bring forth collaboration opportunities, and conduce to deeper engagement with our counterparts and members residing in Australia. We look forward to elevating the Institution’s global presence through exchanges and opening new avenues for international cooperation.
In the few months leading up to our 50th Anniversary in December, and beyond that threshold, let us remain as united in our pursuit of professional excellence as we have been in the previous decades. The strong foundations established by us through half a century of dedicated service shall not fail us in confronting any future challenges, however daunting.

President's Protégé Scheme
The President's Protégé Scheme has been very successful and well-received since its launch in Session 2009/2010. Over the years, the Scheme has not only provided an opportunity for young engineers to gain insights into the work of senior industry figures, but also offered a valuable opportunity for them to build a solid foundation for their future career development. The Scheme for Session 2025/2026 will be open for application in early May 2025. Please refer to the details on the HKIE website.
