In the blink of an eye, 2025 is coming to a close, while the HKIE continues to forge ahead in strengthening cross-border connectivity and global engagement.

A prime example of this was the Shanghai and Hong Kong Symposium on Science and Technology(滬港科技合作研討會, link)which the Institution co-organised with the Shanghai Association for Science & Technology (SAST) from 15-16 October.

Led by Senior Vice President Ir Prof Frank Chan, a delegation from the HKIE engaged in high-level discussions on technological innovation and collaboration in regional engineering. The delegation also attended the 2025 World Federation of Engineering Organizations General Assembly and Global Engineering Conference(世界工程組織聯合會全體大會暨全球工程大會). During this event, the Institution signed an agreement of co-operation with The Shanghai Institution of Engineers, laying the groundwork for a deeper strategic partnership between the two cities.

On 20 October, the HKIE co-hosted the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Municipal Engineering Technical Exchange Conference(粵港澳大灣區市政工程技術交流會). Under the theme of “Mastering Road Technology to Empower Cities”(精研路技 · 賦能城市), the conference brought together government officials and industry experts from three regions to explore emerging development trends and share insights on municipal engineering. These efforts will reinforce the HKIE’s ongoing commitment to fostering profession excellence and innovation across the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

On the international front, President Ir Alice Chow led an HKIE delegation–including Senior Vice President Ir Prof. Frank Chan; Vice President Ir William Luk and four of Ir Chow’s Protégés – on a visit to the UK from 2-5 November. Highlights included a cocktail reception co-hosted with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, an HKIE International Conference (link) and visits to our sister institutions — the CIBSE, the IMechE, and the IStructE. During the trip, the Institution also signed three important reciprocal recognition agreements with The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) marking a milestone in advancing global professional ties and collaboration.

Shortly after, the delegation including the President and Senior Vice President; Past President Ir Dr Otto Poon; Ir Jason Fan; Ir Carmen Lam and Miss Teresa Chau attended COP 30 in Belém, Brazil to help contribute to global discussions on climate action and sustainability. This visit aims to deepen international exchange and bring back insights to strengthen the Institution’s advocacy and commitment to a greener future.

In this regard, the HKIE continues to amplify its voice by engaging with the media and sharing perspectives on engineering’s evolving role in society and emerging topics. These dialogues reinforce the Institution’s dedication to transparency and help build our influence within the engineering profession.

For example, in a media interview published in October (link), the President highlighted the strategic focus of the Session 2025/2026 under the theme “Together we RISE”, by outlining her valuable experiences in some impactful engineering projects and promoting the pivotal role of engineering in shaping Hong Kong’s development and future.

In ongoing activities, the Institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations continue to unfold with the unwavering support of our members. While the “Engineering Legacy: 50 Years of Excellence” exhibition, showcasing 19 exceptional Grand Award-winning projects across Industrial, Infrastructure, and Innovation categories, concluded its successful run at Hysan Place before making its way to the Hopewell Mall from 27 October to 2 November 2025 (link).

Upcoming highlights include the HKIE 50th Anniversary Cocktail Reception (link), “Together we RISE” Carnival (link), the International Railway Safety Council 2025 Conference (link), the Chartered High Speed Rail Trip to Guangzhou (link) and HKIE 50 周年紀念――香港工程傳奇展覽@首都」 Exhibition in Beijing. These events celebrate the Institution’s enduring impact on the city and surrounding areas and foster meaningful exchanges across generations and borders.
