Stepping into the month of September, we draw one step closer to the Institution’s 50th anniversary—a significant milestone that marks half a century of dedication, growth, and impact. As the celebratory atmosphere continues to build, the Institution remains steadfast in its mission to engage with our members across a wide spectrum of initiatives. Through collaborative efforts, we strive to strengthen our ties with the motherland, and to connect with the world.
Before we step beyond our borders, we are committed to fortifying our connections with the local community. Among the souvenirs we released for our anniversary, we collaborated with a social enterprise and now proudly present the HKIE 50th Anniversary Charity Cookie Set. The cookie set aims to make a positive impact on the community, with all proceeds—excluding production costs—donate to support training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Hong Kong.
Every charity cookie set includes cookies featuring two exclusive designs tailored for the anniversary: one featuring the iconic HKIE logo and the other showcasing the 50th Anniversary emblem. This commemorative set makes a thoughtful and unique gift to share with your family, friends, and colleagues during the upcoming festive seasons. More details are available here.
With supporting and working to the very best for our local community, we first excel in our own responsibilities to gain the confidence of others and foster genuine connections. Under the distinctive advantages of enjoying strong support of the Motherland, we will be organising a first-of-its-kind special chartered high-speed rail trip to Guangzhou on 29–30 November 2025, offering members a unique opportunity to connect, engage, and celebrate together. This memorable journey is designed to foster closer ties among members while marking a significant moment in our anniversary celebrations.
More to say, the Shanghai and Hong Kong Symposium on Science and Technology will be held on 15-16 October 2025 in Shanghai. We have been co-organising the event along with the Shanghai Association for Science & Technology (上海市 科學技術協會) alternately between Hong Kong and Shanghai every two years since 1997. This year, we highlight「綠色‧智慧 ‧品質‧重塑與再造」as the theme. We believe the Symposium will provide an excellent opportunity for professionals from both private and public sectors in Hong Kong to cultivate network and make acquaintances with their counterparts in Shanghai. Further details of the two events can be found on the HKIE website.
Strengthening the bond with our Motherland and engaging globally, we require capable individuals for representing us with clarity and conviction to the public. We have provided our identified specialised spokespersons with updated training on the current media landscape, enhancing their communication skills and techniques essential for effectively engaging with international audiences and representing the Institution with confidence and professionalism.
We also organised a media gathering this month, providing a platform for dialogue and interaction with the media, one of the most crucial conduits for conveying our visions to the public. Through this initiative, our Officers, spokespersons and the President’s Protégés played a central role in representing the Institution’s aspiration and diversity. Their participation and voices demonstrated our commitment to openness, collaboration, and professional excellence.
At the gathering, the Institution presented key recommendations submitted to the HKSAR Chief Executive for the 2025 Policy Address (full submission available here). The HKIE outlined strategic proposals across key areas, including innovation and technology, new industrialisation, talent development, and sustainable infrastructure. These recommendations, shaped by inputs from our members to ensure a breadth of perspectives, were prominently featured in media coverage the following day. Additionally, HKIE members actively participated in consultation sessions on behalf of the Institution, providing professional insights to contribute meaningfully to Hong Kong’s policy development.
Our Divisions and members have been giving their very best to foster meaningful connections. Since the beginning of this Session, a diverse array of activities have already been successfully held, both among Divisions and in collaboration with local and Mainland counterparts. These endeavours— ranging from leisure workshops to technical visits and professional dialogues—not only strengthen internal cohesion but also extend our network across regions. Through active participation and shared experiences, our members continue to build bridges, promote mutual understanding, and contribute to a more tightly knit professional community.
Hong Kong holds a unique position of influence. As we have the robust backing from the Motherland and deep global ties, our Institution seeks to leverage this strategic advantage through various initiatives. Along with celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, we hope to propel the HKIE on the world stage through different events and activities each month. By amplifying our voices and presence, we strive to bridge gaps across borders, facilitate international discourse, and showcase the professionalism and values of our engineering community on a global platform.
