The EL Division organised the captioned visit on 30 January 2026 to enable participants to explore the latest cutting-edge initiatives in sustainable energy. The visit began with a brief video introduction to HK Electric which explained the Power Gallery’s transformation from a public bill payment site into an educational facility focus on sustainable energy.
Participants were divided into two groups for an enhanced visitor experience. The tour commenced on the Ground Floor, which highlighted the transition from oil-fired power to zero-carbon electricity. The reliability of electricity supply has remained at 99.999% or better since 1997. Natural gas is now replacing coal as the primary energy source while developing renewable energy from wind and solar is also a focus. Despite the higher costs associated with these technologies, zero-carbon energy remains crucial for sustainable development.
On the First Floor, the exhibit on "Advantages and Limitations of Renewable Energy" featured the Photovoltaic, Energy Storage, Direct Current, and Flexibility (PEDF) system. This innovative energy system integrates solar power and energy storage while ensuring a reliable power supply. An interactive display, complete with a 3D model and a transparent LCD front, demonstrated how the PEDF system operates under various weather scenarios.
The visit concluded on the Second Floor, which focused on solar and wind power systems through an interactive game which enabled participants to learn how to maximise solar energy generation by removing obstacles to sunlight collection. There was also a display of real devices, such as an EV charger and an automatic electric cooking drum, to encourage the use of electricity instead of oil and gas.
At the end of the visit, the EL Division presented a gift to the HK Electric team in a gesture of appreciation. Overall, the experience provided valuable insights into HK Electric's innovative approaches to sustainable energy solutions.
