Following an invitation, a meaningful gathering of Hong Kong control/automation professional engineers and Jiangsu technologists/engineers was held at the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology (JSAST) headquarters on 19 January 2026.
A delegation of six HKIE members was arranged by Ir Prof Louis Lock, Immediate Past Chairman of the CA Division cum Chairman of the CAI DAP.
After welcoming the attendees, Mr Wenxin Yang, JSAST Counsellor (Level II) provided an overview of JSAST and its recent activities with Hong Kong and overseas engineering organisations. He expressed the intention of professionalship engineers in Jiangsu becoming recognised internationally.
In this regard, he felt that meeting professional engineers from Hong Kong would be a good reference for mutual recognition or a reciprocal recognition agreement (RRA) which could be part of a “critical path of activities” for achieving their goal.
Ir Prof Lock highlighted the importance of becoming a corporate member of the HKIE or its equivalent, which could be membership of a professional institution in the UK and to be registered as a chartered engineer (CEng) under the Engineering Council.
He shared his experience of RRAs between the CAI discipline and the Society of Operations Engineers, UK (SOE) and the Institute of Measurement and Control, UK (InstMC). The response appeared to be favourable.
During the trip, a visit to the Siemens Numerical Control Ltd, Nanjing was also arranged. Members were impressed by the automated manufacturing processes.
Afterwards, a visit to the National Graduate College for Elite Engineers of Southeast University was arranged. Prof Yang Chen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee cum Associate Dean of the College, welcomed the Delegation.
As the Delegation Head, Ir Prof Lock delivered a presentation entitled “Proud to Be a CAI Engineer”. He emphasised the importance of becoming a recognised professional, such as a Full Member of the HKIE (MHKIE) or a CEng.
He mentioned a couple of mega international engineering projects to echo the importance of recognised professional qualifications, like an MHKIE, a Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) or CEng. The feedback was encouraging.
