The year 2026 represents a significant milestone for both Hong Kong and the HKIE. As our city advances amid economic restructuring, rapid technological innovation and the global pursuit of carbon neutrality, the engineering profession must continue to serve as a pillar of stability, progress and public confidence. With over five decades of professional leadership and more than 30,000 members across 22 disciplines, the HKIE remains committed to upholding rigorous standards, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and contributing evidence-based policy input for the sustainable development of Hong Kong.
The 2026–27 Budget, announced on 25 February 2026, underscores the Government’s continued commitment to infrastructure investment, innovation and technology, land and housing supply, and green transformation. The Institution welcomes these strategic priorities. Engineering-led investment not only enhances productivity and economic resilience, but also strengthens environmental performance and community well-being. As a professional body, we will continue to provide constructive recommendations to support effective and timely implementation.
On mobility and decarbonisation, the Updated Roadmap on the Popularisation of Electric Vehicles charts a clearer pathway towards the 2035 target of ceasing new registrations of fuel-propelled private cars. Together with the Transport Strategy Blueprint and the promulgation of the Hong Kong Railway Standards, these initiatives establish a comprehensive framework for smart, integrated and low-carbon transport. The adoption of a full life-cycle and systems engineering approach in railway standards, alongside the establishment of the Railway Checking Unit, will enhance interoperability, safety assurance and project governance — reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a leader in railway excellence.
The recent fire incident in Tai Po has deeply affected the community, with families facing the loss of homes and property. The HKIE extends its sincere sympathy to those impacted and supports the Government’s relief and rehousing measures. The incident highlights the critical importance of robust fire engineering design, stringent inspection regimes and proper maintenance. As professionals, we must continuously strengthen building resilience, enhance preventive systems and improve risk management practices. The Institution also supports enhanced oversight of building repair works and the wider adoption of the “Smart Tender (招標妥)” platform to promote transparency, accountability and quality assurance.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the HKIE — a milestone that reflects the unwavering dedication and professionalism of generations of engineers who have contributed to Hong Kong’s infrastructure development and cityscape. The “Together We Rise” Carnival, to be held on 14–15 March 2026 at the West Kowloon Art Park, will be a signature celebration of this important occasion, bringing together members, industry partners and the wider community.
As part of the anniversary programme, the Institution will present a commemorative exhibition building on the Legacy Award roving exhibition first launched at the Annual Dinner in April last year. The exhibition will feature distinguished award-winning projects alongside iconic local infrastructure landmarks that exemplify engineering excellence. In April, the exhibition will travel to Beijing as part of a major engineering showcase, highlighting Hong Kong’s project delivery capabilities and technical expertise while strengthening professional exchange and collaboration. President Alice will lead a delegation of HKIE Fellow Members to Beijing to officiate at the opening ceremony of the exhibition alongside senior officials of the HKSAR Government, underscoring the significance of this milestone event and reinforcing high-level professional and governmental engagement.
We are confident that the Beijing showcase will not only demonstrate the depth and diversity of Hong Kong’s engineering achievements, but also open new avenues for partnership, innovation and shared progress. It will serve as a meaningful conclusion to this chapter of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, while marking the beginning of closer professional collaboration and a renewed commitment to advancing engineering excellence together.
International engagement continues to strengthen our global outlook. In January, we welcomed delegations from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), exchanging insights on governance, standards and professional development to broaden collaboration and mutual recognition.
Looking ahead, climate change, digital transformation, infrastructure renewal and evolving urban demands require vision, innovation and integrity. By leveraging our professional platforms, nurturing young talent and deepening collaboration with Government, industry and academia, the HKIE will continue to advance engineering excellence — contributing decisively to Hong Kong’s sustainable, resilient and forward-looking future.
